They are sold on earth as pets, people lose interest, they also eat garbage, city officials employ them as cleaners. Soon, the Hobbles overpopulate earth. There is a "culling" necessary to deal with these problem animals. Although he has grown wealthy from the sale of the Hobbles, the scientist regrets discovering them and sending them back to earth.
